Backmasking My Way Into Your Heart - Liner Notes & Attribution Introducing the project... Backmasking is a collection of remixes I created between 2007 and 2009 during my stay at ccMixter. Other projects cover the rest of the songs written while there. This one focuses on music written to other people's vocal pieces. Exceptions are With Friends Like These and Blind Date, which are both original pieces with ties to ccMixter. With Friends Like These was uploaded there as a sample pack for others to use in their remixes, whereas Blind Date made quite a journey through ccMixter space before coming back home. In the word(s) of ccMixter's favourite dj MC Jack In The Box, enjoy... Death At Corky's (Relaxation Tapes - Reel 2) Death At Corky's started out as a bit of fun and something I thought I could create fairly quickly. In the end it took me longer than I anticipated or hoped, because fun or not, I still wanted it to be as good as subliminally possible. The idea for it came to me while I was on a train on my way back home after visiting a friend in Amsterdam. The following sources have been used: "Relaxation Break for Remixers" by essesq "Corky's Bar-B-Q" by Doghouse Riley "SH Glissando Guitar" by Dr. Goldklang "Women Singing" by Leady "Ocean Waves Crushing" by Luftrum Jax This was the second time John approached me for a remix of one of his tunes after my remix of Summer Glau. The first time I wasn't able to come up with something decent, so I was a bit hesitant to take on this new challenge. However, I think that this one turned out rather ok. I kept it short and simple, but it has a nice drive to it, courtesy of Audiotechnica's percussion track. This is a remix of Leodora by John Anealio Vocals, lyrics & guitar (backwards, forwards & slide) by John Anealio Percussion by Audiotechnica Hypothetical Reality Hypothetical Reality was my non-entry for the Dream In Blue Remix Contest hosted by MI7 and the one that really started my remixing period (although it was the Calendar Songs project that actually pointed me in the direction of ccMixter). In the end the final version wasn't that different from what I had at the time of the deadline. Not that I would have stood a chance against the other entries, because they were pretty good. This is a remix of Dream In Blue by A Minor Theory (http://www.aminortheory.com) Vocals and lyrics by Vox With Friends Like These An original piece that started out as an instrumental song, mostly because I didn't know any vocalists personally. Eventually, Steve spontaneously volunteered to have a try. This was my attempt at writing a song in a NIN style with a hint of Gary Numan's Are Friends Electric. Funnily enough it made some people think of King Crimson. The funny part being that it wasn't my intention, in spite of the fact that KC is one of my favourite bands. I guess that the distorted vocals made them think of 21st Century Schizoid Man. Vocals by Synthetic aka Steve Engler Lead Guitar by Edwin van Buuringen Party Sounds sample by FreqMan Scene 2: The Burning Of The Books Another one for the sake of fun and speed, just like Death At Corky's. And again it took me slightly longer than originally intended. While thinking about the running order of the songs for this project, I thought that Scene 2 might make a good introduction to my remixes containing Anchor's vocals. The following sources have been used: "essesq NSFW Promo" and "Dance Loop 1" by essesq "Skwerm" by Scott Altham "Voice Over Intro to Scene 2: Bookburning - Blue Lips, Loose Hips" by Scomber "Sense Of Place" by Anchor Méjans "Stall Shower" by FreqMan Oh My Antonia My version isn't that different from Anchor's original. After being unable to come up with the "lush orchestrations" that Anchor had envisioned for this song, I decided to keep my involvement to a minimal, because Anchor's version actually was already perfect. For that same reason I was hesitant to release it under the Subliminal monicker. But here it is anyway... This is a remix of O My Antonia (3 a.m.) by Anchor Méjans Vocals and lyrics by Anchor Méjans Piano (A minor improvisation on Sunday) by The 3am Association Spoken word (Where Earth Meets Sea - a love story) by Ruggea Atlas Reshaped Another pella from Anchor backed up by a spoken word piece from Ruggea. Khidir's guitar provides the perfect backdrop for this combination. This is a remix of Atlas by Anchor Méjans Vocals and lyrics by Anchor Méjans Spoken word (All Things Whisper - Story Of The World) by Ruggea Guitar samples taken from Prequel by Khidir Days And Nights (Vincent's Song) This one was definitely the most difficult of all of my Anchor songs, but it is also my favourite one. I tried a lot of approaches over the course of many months and in all that time it was constantly on my mind. But all of a sudden it started coming together and with newly recorded vocals by Anchor it ended up being one of my better tunes (at least in my very humble opinion...). Vocals, lyrics & cello by Anchor Méjans Grandfather Clock sample recorded by Dave Incamas and cleaned up by DigifishMusic Summer Glau (In The Heart Of Autumn) Another personal favourite of mine. I have to admit that without the subject matter of the lyrics I probably wouldn't have tried to remix it. Not that the original version or John's vocals weren't any good, but it was not the kind of stuff I thought I could turn into something decent myself. But in the end I managed to give it that slightly dark touch I like. The source material from Porchcat and Trifonic was also very helpful in achieving my aim. This is a remix of Summer Glau by John Anealio Vocals by John Anealio Lyrics by John DeNardo Ethereal background vocals taken from Sooner Or Later by Trifonic Drum loop by PorchCat The Bitter End What has been said about Days And Nights can also be said about The Bitter End. It was a long and sometimes frustrating process before I was able to come up with this final version. It was also the last thing I completed for this collection and uploaded to ccMixter before taking a break from there. The pella and especially the lyrics were just too good not to use. This is a remix of Perfume by Narva9 Vocals and lyrics by Narva9 Drums and percussion taken from Lies and Broken by Trifonic Blind Date Originally written for the follow-up to the Van Buuringen, Dijksman, Goorden & Simons album The Ring And The Dance (which never happened), Blind Date was offered in an unfinished state to DJ Rkod for his The ccMixter Collective project. From DJ Rkod's final version I took Kaer's and FB's contributions to finish my own version. Radiotimes was so kind to donate the percussion track from his version of Anchor's (and others') Welcome Home and Fireproof Babies added lead guitar especially recorded for my version of Blind Date. Vocals and Lyrics by Kaer Trouz Ebow and Lead Guitar by Fireproof Babies Percussion by Radiotimes Small Bits Of Pieces Another one of the struggling kind. It wasn't until I put Rebecca's pella and Colab's piano piece (which was written for another Rebecca Law pella) together that things started to work. Later on (actually right before I uploaded it to ccMixter) I started to have some doubts about how good both sources actually fitted together. A lot of people seemed to like it though and it was even an Ed Pick at ccMixter. One or two glasses of red wine help me to listen past the not quite tight fit. This is a remix of Fall To Pieces by Rebecca Law Vocals and Lyrics by Rebecca Law Piano by Colab
